I'm cooling in the after glow of Obama won presidency and I couldn't be happier. I feel the joy of having an Afro-American voted president of the United States. I also feel the joy in the knowledge that we will be free George W. Bush. A president whose approval rating is worst than Richard Nixon at the height of the Watergate! But also I feel optimism despite the fact of the looming catastrophe that Bush and his people engendered for us. It's one of the few times I found my self voting for someone as opposed to voting against someone else.

It's Coming!! Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio

Beginning at 11:13 pm PST Oct 11th and until Nov 1st at 3:58 pm PST in the sign of Libra, we shall be dwell in the realm of desire!

This Retrograde is interesting in the same ways that Mercury in Cancer was. Again the focus is based in emotions and that you'll have to re-evaluate how you feel about the important questions of life. However, Mercury in Scorpio contends itself with the fulfillment of desires and how one seeks to fulfill them. This retrograde concerns the difference between eating a basic meal and dining in a five star restaurant. It's a matter of degrees. Someone use to eating richer food might be quite fine with simple bread and water. What do you want? The passions for what you want will be stoked through these next two and a half weeks (yes, nice short one)! Fulfillment will be quite another matter. Retrogrades tend to require recognition and exploration of their "themes" (so to speak), so feel out your passions in these times and recharge/resurrect the things that have seemingly died or are lurking in the shadows. Restoration of hope and the power of renewal are the hallmarks of this transition. “Follow your bliss” as J. Campbell would say.

Looking for some lovin' or a heart felt fling. Go for it! Scorpio and Pluto are all about procreation and generation, so if it's been “a while” since your last, this next two weeks may provide an antidote. Just be careful because Pluto, Scorpio's ruling planet, is Lord of consequence, so if you start in a shady place don't be surprised what may show up from a place you thought well hidden. Power plays and politicking may boomerang in ways that'll have you pulling your hair out so to make the most of the (mis)communication part of this transit. Clarify and communication from honest spaces will prove helpful in service to all parties considered.

During the course of this transit we have several important Planets to consider as well. The Sun and the Moon will both enter the sign of Scorpio, intensifying the transit. The Moon (unconscious) and the Sun (conscious) will be in places where all of the retrograde themes will play out on many levels. Meaning that those desires that you’re aware of and some you are not may become focuses this period. Something you wrote of off long ago may now be shown as a vital and important part of your life. But the lust (operative word) for results may cause you to overshoot the target and deny you of the very goal you sought. See this as a time to get fired up not necessarily a time to fire off. In fact, sometimes having a goal to shoot for gives you a reason d'etre. Finding your passion again is a big part of ones work here. Remember, Retrogrades often delay the very subject matter they're focused on, so work for solutions intuitively and carefully.

I like to thank all who showed up for FONKIN'! It was a blast! First of all Broadus and the ReTox crew for without whom we could not have done it. Second to the marvelous Darin Wilson, also know as Dr. Booty, who played two sets back to back and was rocking the house. The glorious Funky Beulah did the usual best, kicking the night up a notch or two and special guest star Belinda Blair came in and with her beautiful voice and blazing ukulele brought much fun and passion to the night! We were graced to with not only Lord Huckleberry and Opal Essence but NoNo The Naughty Naked Ape! Stephania from Circus island was there as was my beloved Papa PJ and Psyren, whose imminent birthday promises to be the event of the season! There are pictures of the night taken by douglas. He's simply amazing.

What a great night and let's do it again some time!

For those of you who missed Precompression and The fashion show we had based upon recycled materials here' s your chance to relive that fun night. All The sights,sounds(but not the smells) of fashion, trash, glamour and haute couture. Designs by Domini, Patchwerk press, Velvet Cream, Lucid Dawn and bad unkl sista are featured here!
In keeping with the participatory spirit of Burning Man, we brought people up on stage and let them strut their stuff. Also included on the DVD is the amazing Tim Barsky performing his combo of beatbox/Flute. While it doesn't include The rest of the evening remarkable performers and entertainers(Tiger Honey Pot, Gooferman, Funky Beulah, The Evolution Control Committee) Tim and the DJ's you'll hear on the sound track rock the house. Even Dustfish gets in on the act, involved in everything from production and crew to modeling(Opal Essence is prominently featured and LORD HUCKLEBERRY makes a cameo). And speaking of modeling, The models in this show are absolutely gorgeous adorned in in all manner of beautiful trashions.. Two Noteworthy models of the night are $teven Ra$pa and Blondie, whose labors and efforts make Precompression possible.

I can't wait for you see it and look forward to screening it soon. Also, for those of you Playa bound, there are plans for another Trashion show which I'll have the pleasure of MC'ing at Center Camp. Who would have thought trash could be so exciting!!!

Dustfish, dubbed the Trashiest Camp at Burning, was in full flower, both up front and behind the scenes, putting the "camp" back into Theme camp. These amazing pictures, taken by Warren DiFranco Hsu are filled with glamour and haute couture as the trashion show raised Dumpster diving to high art.

And so on March 10, 2007, in West Oakland, an event occurred that announced loudly and publicly(It was listed on Tribe) to the world DUSTFISH was ready for it’s close-up. In alliance with such groups as ANON SALON, SPACE COWBOYS and others, DUSTFISH served up one of the most exciting events one could ever hope to attend.
MASSIVE it was called and ,true to it’s namesake, it was a gathering of tribes and peoples inside a cavernous space that held all the great things Burning Man has to offer. There were colossal metal sculptures(one of which served as a the lighting grid) marvelous fashions, art installations and three spacious performance stages included everything from AfroFunk to Rock and Roll. Stellar DJ’s manned the turntables
revving up the action and everywhere was dancing, carousing and partying. At turns it could be was overwhelming, even frightening and yet at others thrilling and downright awesome! you couldn’t walk ten feet for not running into someone you knew or someone that you really wanted to meet. A real night of nights, peopled by an exciting cast of characters.

The thump of subterranean bass was the first thing I encountered. It was very reassuring. To me it is the sound of the Burning Man and harbingers of great parties from long ago. Next was the crowds of people lining up at the door. From hardcore freaks to first time partiers(a young woman with a crown of balloons made commented that it was her first real party) all parts of SF nightlife was represented. One of my particular favorite moment was that of a group of hip young dudes looking at each other and nodding that this was indeed “the place.” And everywhere you looked saw faces of so many of great people our community produces. Whether behind the scenes or at the forefront, MASSIVE’S promotional efforts resulted in phenomenal attendance. In fact, some party stalwarts had forgone other commitments of previous evenings rather than miss out on this event! They were rewarded by a theatrical, magical night happens every once in a while. Only grand opera, in my estimate, is comparable.

But for as much as this night sought to stay underground, The dimensions, the scale of the event alone ensured that would not be the case. Like a mushroom cloud above a city,
MASSIVE showed that DUSTFISH(and some extent, The BURNING MAN community) could really throw down the gauntlet. No mere Booty Checkpoint, MASSIVE combined multi-medias together in a seamless ways and spoke of both audacity and polished experience. Knowing some of what to expect, I was totally unprepared for what LORD HUCKLEBERRY and crew had cooked up.

The Flyer said it all: FLAMING LOTUS GIRLS, THE UNIMOG, MARK GROWDEN, THE CORRUPTERS PurEvil, Dan DAS Mann, JOE MANGRUM, Miss Velvet Cream and list goes on and on. In fact the flyer changed three times as more people came on board.

MASSIVE was a force to be reckoned with. It drew people from came different parts of the country and required the kind of commitments of time, energy and money much in way that any big event does.

I arrived just about the time the police did. They wore a look that said they weren’t going to just ask us to turn the bass down. Through pools of black water they trammeled in to rain on our parade. They were everywhere at once and they meant business. Armed with guns and cameras, the police scoured the large space in search of evildoers and contraband. Their attitude was arrogant, cold and suspicious. We had gained their notice and for it they contemptuously ended our revels.

And in that moment I realized that DUSTFISH was no longer underground.

We were emergent, made quite visible with by our outrageousness and wild conduct. From this point forward we’d need to be conscious of those forces we had offended by flaunting our freedoms. DUSTFISH, the missing tooth in the smile that is Burning Man had crested to surface and was making big waves. It is one of the consequences of brilliance. A great performer steps into the spotlight and must be willing to
receive their due, be it catcalls or standing ovations. No longer content to swim in a very small bowl, DUSTFISH’S MASSIVE heralded the arrival of group of individuals and the great promise that they offer.

Televison, A Vast and Terrible Wasteland

Why is it that all the Television I've seen in the past month consists of Police arresting people, Judges judging them and endless array of butchery in the form of forensic examinations, surgeries and psychic vivisection through televised "Reality" Shows. Television is the land of the lost, filled will people who suffer in some way and indicate to us all the pessimist components of life. Time after time I found myself shaking my head at the catalog of death, destruction or misfortune. I'm sure I'm in danger of generalizing, but, whether it's a Judge scowling at some miscreant or cops wrestling some angry drunk to the ground or a plastic surgeon applying acid to an aging starlet face, TV is a exploitative, cheap foray into worst that life has to offer. 24 hour news is both fearsome and pallid, reaching into a kind of abstract kind of angst that there are really bad, people and awful things that we should really be afeard of. And their stabs at entertainment are just the dregs of what they can provide. The scabs of wounds not work picking.

LAST NIGHT I HAD EXPLAIN TO SOMEONE WHO MAO ZEDONG WAS.

I was wearing this T-shirt which is a black and white portrait of Mao done in benday dots. The shirt is unique in that its an off kilter portrait of Mao head (including the back of his head). A friend bought it for me as a birthday when she went to China and I like to think of it as more of a nod to Andy Warhol than to Chairman Mao (And yes, I once had to explain to someone who Andy Warhol was). Mao Zedong! The Little Red Book! Here we have a man whose very name stirred up controversy. He changed the course of China History and caused the deaths of many of its citizen. I can go on but the thing that last night impressed upon me was strange new world I live in. Granted I probably can't recall a Member of Harding's Cabinet or Union generals other than Grant or when the White house was rebuilt but I actively seek knowledge of that which created our nation and the world which within we live. With the understanding that each successive generation has a need to focus the most pressing concerns and issues I can accept the ignorance with regard to the Cultural Revolution or the Great Leap Forward. But this is the Cold War I'm talking about. It isn’t ancient history. Oblivion was only a kiss away. I don't need jingoism or catchphrases or propaganda from either side but this is our history, a time that can be reasonable documented with the tools that Internet (Google, Wikipedia, Chinese History website anyone?). The very internet I write this missive into now, can offer vast amount mind numbing information.

As a student of Frank Herbert and George Orwell, I realize That History (a product of Memory) can be quite mutable in the hands of adept historian, demagogue or drunken party guest. But now having said that, how can we command so many vast bits of data that no one has the time to regard? Take in account that again one’s own interests, preoccupations and desires frame their point of reference I don’t expect you to know EVERYTHING but how can you not aware of recent history. I was both disturbed and amused. With no more that Library books, print media and hearsay I still possessed a catalog of information far great than some who claimed to be on the net all the time

The group of five planets in Scorpio are now breaking up a bit but we're about experience yet another Stellium into the coming weeks in the sign of Sagittarius. Breathe a sigh of relief and where you can reflect upon areas that Retrograde may have helped in.

Mercury Retrograde Begins October 28th

Mercury retrograde begins tomorrow. It is in the sign of Scorpio and may require us to rethink/reposition many of our personal plans and ambitions. But more importantly, it comes on the eve of one of the most powerful planetary configuration in astrology, a stellium. A stellium is a group of five or more planets in the same sign huddled to together or “conjunct” to use an astrological term. Scorpio, a sign or energy that is generated by the planet Pluto (Now a demi-planet, whatever that means) represents the forces of change in ones life. In everyone's life there's an area, called a house in natal astrology, which Scorpio has strong influence over. If, for example, a planet in the sign of Scorpio enters your 7th house, an area that governs relationships, important personal relationships could undergo major and significant changes. Given that tomorrow one area will have all these energies (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter), be prepared for big shifts in that part of your life.

Scorpio deals in areas that people are often fearful or ashamed of. If we consider issues that Scorpio (and its ruling planet Pluto) addresses, they are often the basic, necessary matters of life. It is by avoiding these them we create problems for ourselves. For example, now you have to move because old house, a place you never like, has burned to the ground or you have been waiting years to make an important professional change in your career and now an opportunity comes requires direct action on your part. You’ll be presented with changes that require adaptation and diligence. And given that we are taking about what we in astrology call the social planets, this stellium will effect changes in your personal life that require you to confront a matters head on rather then debate or wait them out. Release might be a good word to adopt at this time. If some serious issue flares to life, look to see where you been playing it too safe. Has some condition grown stagnant that now requires change? What areas of your life could use a little shaking up? And with regard to plutonian transitions, the more you resist the change, the stronger those forces become. As the transformational power of the zodiac, Pluto requires growth. So when we release of the old life it may seems like we're losing everything, more punishment (Why me God?) then development. The beauty of this particular transition is that it is both swift and restorative. Often, once we see the new thing that Pluto has brought in our lives we find we’re often happy with the change and are aware that could never really again be satisfied with what we left behind. It through confrontation that we remember what it means to be alive.

Now, two elements/energies are going to provide challenges to this period. The aforementioned retrograde and the planet Saturn, currently in the sign of Leo. Mercury until about Nov 17 is going to produce a great deal of miscommunication and misunderstanding. As it will be squaring or pushing against the Scorpio planets, you may find people questioning your motives or feeling threaten by the new actions you are taking. Someone may accuse you of taking them for granted or taking advantage of them. You may struggle against someone in authority or you’ll have to assert authority in a very pronounced way. Encountering setbacks in the very areas that you will be required to make changes in may make this a frustrating retrograde. Ego and challenges to ones' ego will require great patience and honesty. The kind of honesty that may make you feel uncomfortable at first but then should prove most liberating in the end.

On good news front, if your looking to make some time with some significant other or strike up a new romance, as Marvin Gaye would say” Let’s get it on".

Attraction and regeneration (emphasis on generation part) will be the par for the course. If some sexy thing is making eyes at you, cut to chase. Make your move. If you feel that good chemistry flowing, don’t wait around. The retrograde may make initial contacts challenging but, with little honesty, a good time can be had by all (Taurus’ take note).

Granted, there may be an awful lot of flings and one night stands. Cie la vie!

The Water Trine of Uranus in Pisces and Venus in Scorpio will make for some very creative moments as well. If you’re swepted up by some mystery and intrigue in the coming weeks, go with it. Scorpio, which governs hidden knowledge, will make for a fine adventure.

To reintegrate, maintain calm where ever possible, try not to take things too personally and if you do ultimately lose your cool, be willing to make what amends when the opportunity presents itself Keep an open mind, shed some baggage and make room for some new things to enter your life.

My Birthday was a Blast

I like to thank you people, My Family, for trying to kill me. From Saturday night on I have been literally bathed in/With Pleasure, Joy
and the Love of Good Hearts. So much love and excitement can't be good for anyone. It almost killed me but being a good pleasure hog I was able to absorb most of it.

I was surrounded by Lords(Ikon and Huckleberry), Artists(esp Joe Mangrum & Velvet Cream who gave several great presents), Musicians(D and Papa PJ), Doctors, Glitter Twins and superfreaks galore(special thanks to April). Sacrificing that much sleep and sanity has never paid off as well as it did this last Satsunmonday. Who could have thought getting old and crusty should have such benefits. The chocolate was plentiful and the dramas pithy. If all my birthday's are this good then I'm looking forward to having one each month!

Burning Man was a Blast

Yes!!! More Fun Than I could have imagined, As much fun as I could stand to have and and more, Etc.

This year's Burn for me was so good I kept saying to people that I felt as if I had "robbed the Karma Bank!" I was given a full Spa treatment by one of the most beautiful woman I ever met(Karima). I sang and danced my ass off and even almost got hauled away by the federales. Best Burning man ever!

Also, many characterized this Burn as "mellow" as opposed to "Beserk","Psychotic" or what have you.
Then again, by my experience(8 years) and BM standards, This was a "mellow" year. Especially when your sipping Patron Tequilla(much thanks to my great friend, Ty).

Two Recommendation to the Folks who build the Man(God/dess bless them)

1)The Man is shrinking - The Man seemed shorter this year (get a bigger one)

or maybe

2) the Burn platform is too big - and nearly indestructible. It never came crashing down in that beautiful, cathartic that it can(and often does). The Man was caught on one of the support beams and took forever to burn up

Hell, Next year, make it out of balsa wood or some other cheap material. The burn platform should be the least of our concerns.

But all in all, what a wonderful burn it was.

I'm Not Ready For Burning Man

Here we go again. The desert beckons and I'm just not ready, on any level. What to bring? What not to bring? What do I want to wear? What ever shall I do with my hair, ad naseum. I remember The first time I went(this year is my 8th go round). Yes I brought to much crap and no I didn't start out in a Theme camp/Village. The first year was all about the magical possibility of the experience. The wonder of a place that anything and everything could happen. The ticket says it all

"YOU VOLUNTARILY ASSUME THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH BY ATTENDING THIS EVENT AND RELEASE BURNING MAN FROM ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM THIS RISK."

How exciting! The thrill of those words. It's almost like stealing a fizzy lifting drink from Willie Wonka bubble room. And much like that mad foray into the chocolate factory, There's no earthly way of knowing which direction I'm are going.

The Playa nights can be quite cold. Art Installation sometimes appear closer that they really are and you've to keep on your toes for the random drunken person on a bike or some crazed art car careening out of control. The quest for the nearest port-a-potty is both a blessing and a curse. And yet, here I am, blessed as it were, to have a ticket. I want to get ready. But how does one prepare? None of the previous burns prepares you for the next one. Hell, even the man changes from year to year.

I guess I have to ride these moments like a current or wave and allow the experience to happen and be present for what ever comes of it.
